In the unschooling movement, there is significant emphasis on empowering children to choose what they want to learn. I concur that freedom is a fundamental aspect of self-directed education, as intrinsic motivation facilitates more effective and efficient learning. However, I also believe that children sometimes benefit from guidance and encouragement to explore new endeavors. Having encountered challenges with my own children’s reluctance to try new things, particularly after years in a traditional school environment where they were accustomed to being directed, I realized the importance of offering support. While there were numerous instances when my kids initially resisted, I observed that after gentle encouragement, they often discovered enjoyment and willingly continued the activity. This approach should not be viewed as coercion, but rather as providing opportunities and promoting initial exploration, allowing children to decide if they wish to persist. Achieving a balance is crucial in all interactions with our children.
The prevalence of electronic devices and the internet presents a significant challenge in granting children complete freedom in today’s world. Even adults struggle to exercise self-control in this regard, making it particularly daunting for children. Consequently, I believe that parents play a vital role in striking a balance between freedom, encouragement, and supervision. I can attest that this is an arduous task, demanding considerable energy from parents. Nevertheless, I remain steadfast in my belief that it is a worthwhile endeavor for the well-being and future of our children.
